The entire first season of Prime Video’s adaptation of Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang is currently available to stream, one day earlier than announced.
Paper Girls Season 1 — which consists of eight episodes, running an average of 45 minutes each — is streaming on Prime Video now. The series was initially announced to be premiering tomorrow, July 29.
“NOW STREAMING?! Our friends at [Prime Video] have apparently dropped all eight episodes of Paper Girls a day early for you fine folks, so you can watch it right now, just about anywhere in the world!” Vaughan himself wrote on Instagram. The comic book writer is also holding a sweepstakes where fans can enter to which a prize pack containing various pieces of promotional Paper Girls goods.
Written by Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Runaways) and illustrated by Chiang (HumanTarget), Paper Girls was published by Image Comics, running for a total of 30 issues from October 2015 to July 2019. In July 2019, just before the comic ended, Amazon Studios announced it was developing a live-action adaptation of Paper Girls for Prime Video. The project was ultimately ordered to series one year later.
Paper Girls Is Prime Video’s Latest Comic Book Adaptation
“Four young friends’ paper routes are disrupted on Hell Day 1988, when they unknowingly time travel to 2019,” the official synopsis for Prime Video’s Paper Girls reads. “While searching for a way home, they clash with members of two time-jumping factions at war, and must come face-to-face with their adult selves and learn how to work together to save the world.”
The live-action series stars Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle, Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng and Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman. Additionally, Ali Wong stars as the adult version of Erin, while Nate Corddry stars as Larry. Vaughan and Chiang both serve as executive producers on the series.
“It’s so thrilling,” Vaughan said of the adaptation while speaking with CBR at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. “It’s one thing to get to see moments from the comic that are translated perfectly, as it was imagined, but it’s much more exciting to see moments that Cliff and I had never imagined, or we didn’t have the real estate [for]… We had just 30 monthly comics to do [this].
“I think the excitement of seeing these four extraordinary performers… We just want to see them go to places that maybe we didn’t get to go in the comic,” he continued. “So it’s very cool to have a series that, if you loved it, you know captures the spirit [and] the tone perfectly, but it’s not the kind of thing that you can just all go to Wikipedia and know exactly what’s going to happen. There are still huge surprises, and that has just been tremendous.”
